Swami Nand Lal Ji: The Mystic Sage of Kashmir – A Life of Spiritual Splendor and Universal Love

 


Swami Nand Lal Ji Maharaj, also known as Nand Bab, was a revered mystic saint from Kashmir, India, renowned for his spiritual wisdom and service to humanity.

Birth and Early Life

Born in 1902 in Gurgari Mohalla, Zaina Kadal, Srinagar, into a prosperous Koul family, Swami Nand Lal Ji was the son of Pt. Shahaj Koul. His mother passed away during his childhood, and his father remarried Smt. Zoonmal. From a young age, Swami Ji exhibited a deep inclination towards spirituality, often visiting Hari Parbat to pay respects to Mata Sharika Bhawani.

Spiritual Journey

At the age of 14, Swami Nand Lal Ji renounced worldly attachments and began serving various saints and sages. He spent time in Jinpura (Sopore) at an ashram and later in Anantnag (Gosaigund) with Swami Atmaram Ji, and at Gautam Nag with Swami Gash Kak Ji. During this period, he learned Sanskrit from Swami Sridhar at Sopore and studied various scriptures under his guidance.

In pursuit of self-realization, Swami Ji traveled extensively, including journeys to Mansarovar and Ladakh. He spent about two years (1945-1947) meditating at the Sharda Devi pilgrimage in Tathwal (now in Pakistan), where he conducted numerous yajnas, sankirtans, and satsangs, attracting devotees from all communities.

Teachings and Lifestyle

Swami Nand Lal Ji was known for his ascetic lifestyle and profound spiritual insights. He emphasized sincere devotion, meditation, and the performance of one's duties with love and dedication as the path to achieving oneness with the Divine. His teachings transcended religious boundaries, attracting followers from diverse backgrounds, including Hindus and Muslims.

Ashrams and Disciples

Swami Ji established two main ashrams: one at Tikkar (Kupwara) and another at Hushru in Tehsil Chadura. These ashrams became centers of spiritual learning and practice, drawing devotees from various regions. He had several prominent disciples, including Swami Vibeshan Ji Maharaj, Swami Kral Bab Ji Maharaj, and Swami Mast Ram Ji Maharaj, who continued his spiritual legacy.

Miracles and Prophecies

Swami Nand Lal Ji was reputed for his miraculous abilities and prophetic insights. Numerous accounts describe his healing powers, clairvoyance, and acts of compassion. He was known to cure ailments, foresee events, and provide guidance that transcended ordinary understanding, further endearing him to his followers.

Later Years and Mahasamadhi

In his later years, Swami Ji continued his spiritual practices and service to humanity. He foretold the time of his departure from the mortal world, attaining Mahasamadhi on Gaura Tritiya in 1968 at Pamposh Colony, New Delhi, at the residence of Pt. Prem Nath Ji Sadhu. His passing was deeply mourned by devotees across religious and social spectrums, reflecting his universal appeal and the profound impact of his spiritual legacy.
